Where does the Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) Designation go as campuses and communities restore pre-pandemic operations?
My name is Alvaro J. Muñiz, and I am the new Director of International, Community, and Economic Engagement here at APLU. Before APLU, I worked on numerous economic, workforce, and community development initiatives at George Mason University, Ashoka, and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. I look forward to leading the IEP program and collaborating with our IEP startups and designees as we move into the next chapter!
The IEP program plans to focus its efforts over the next years on the following:
- As part of our new office of International, Community, and Economic Engagement, we will explore how we can connect with our university partners in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Territories.
- Continuing engagement with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), particularly but not limited to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).
- Stabilizing our 5-year extension and 10-year renewal process and pipeline.
- In partnership with our IEP institutions, we plan to develop additional content, including:
- Increased connection opportunities with our designees
- Advanced webinar workshop topics
- Another series akin to our partnership with the National League of Cities and National Governors Association
- Affinity groups amongst peer IEP universities
- The IEP 2.0 Summit during this year’s CECE Summer Meeting in Detroit August 2 to 5, held in partnership with our colleagues in the Council for Government Affairs. We’ll focus on Designee engagement in the IEP Community of Practice.
