Communication and Engagement Strategies to External Stakeholders
On April 19, APLU hosted a webinar for its current IEP startup cohort built around the theme of “Communication and Engagement Strategies to External Stakeholders.”
The panelists were: Dr. Deborah Cours, Interim Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Studies, and Dr. Julia Heinen, Director of Community Engagement from California State University, Northridge.
The panelists began the webinar with an overview of California State University, Northridge (CSUN), along with their accomplishments in the IEP program, including the 2020 IEP Talent Award. They then discussed their initial Growth & Improvement Plan, which focused on three areas:
- Building Entrepreneurship
- Curricular and Co-curricular Programs
- Interdisciplinary
- Social Entrepreneurship
- Global Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Equity Innovation Hub (EIH)
- Increasing Research and Sponsored Projects
- Growth in funded projects: 2022 – $35 million
- Improved pre- and post-award
- Creation of a student research office
- Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Promoting Opportunities for Diversity in Education and Research (PODER) – a large undergraduate biomedical research training program established in 2014 by a $21.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

- Improving Communication in the Innovation and Entrepreneurial Environment
- Enhanced website
- Collaboration across units/divisions
- Creating a data hub
- Community Convenings
