The National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE) was held in Honolulu, Hawaii from May 28 to June 1. Jimmy McClellan, Associate Director in APLU’s Office for Urban Initiatives and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU), attended and presented at the conference with a group of colleagues from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Jobs for the Future, and Re-Up Education.
Their workshop focused on how adult learners of color navigate campuses as parents, commuters, full-time employees, etc. Participants were guided through developing digital campus maps and orientations of their institutions that would highlight places and spaces on campus that could be important and beneficial to new traditional and contemporary students. Jimmy stated that “NCORE was an excellent opportunity to hear from college administrators and educators about how racial and social justice efforts influence their work on campuses.” This year’s programming included discussions of current events (e.g. campus protests), college programming and policies (e.g. academic and student affairs), and a particular focus on Native Hawaiian & Indigenous student experiences.
NCORE will be held in New York City next year. For more information about how to attend or submit a program proposal, click here.
