Paying Tribute to President Jimmy Carter

As our nation celebrates President Jimmy Carter’s extraordinary legacy of public service, volunteering, and peacemaking, we’re reminded of the role Cooperative Extension had on the trajectory of his own life.

He recognized the critical role of Cooperative Extension on his life, saying in a tribute to Extension during its 100th anniversary: “In all the ways that I had an early developmental life in earning a living and learning how to live as a productive citizen, I would say that the Extension Service had a major beneficial effect on me.”

He commented on the value and importance of Cooperative Extension in his life, family, and community as well as the important role Extension will play in the future to feed the world. President Carter reflected “Cooperative Extension was a constant source of inspiration, advice, and counsel [for my farmer father].”

When he was inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame, President Carter commented, “I was very eager to learn all I could about agriculture so I would go down to Extension courses and learn the latest techniques on growing peanuts, cotton, and corn. I used to be out in the field with the University of Georgia experts.”
