Oklahoma State University is making waves as one of fewer than 100 institutions to receive the Innovation and Economic Prosperity Designation by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
This is no small feat. It’s a recognition of our efforts to boost economic growth, support workforce development, and stay true to our land-grant mission of serving the public good. For OSU, it’s more than a badge of honor — it’s a reflection of who it is and the impact it strives to make every day.
Getting this recognition wasn’t easy. It involved a deep dive into OSU’s economic engagement efforts, led by The Innovation Foundation at OSU in partnership with OSU Global and additional university teams. The process examined how OSU works with communities, businesses and partners to drive local and regional development. From supporting startups to creating workforce training programs, the initiatives were carefully reviewed by a national commission to assess just how much impact we’re making. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot.
So, what makes OSU such a standout when it comes to economic engagement? Let’s break it down.
First, there’s its role in aerospace and defense innovation. The Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education is pioneering technologies like autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing, placing Oklahoma front and center in the future of flight. Meanwhile, the LaunchPad Research Center is bridging the gap between OSU and industry partners, creating opportunities for entrepreneurial and technological breakthroughs.
Innovation doesn’t stop there. Cowboy Enterprises — a suite of support networks including Cowboy Technologies, Cowboy Innovation Accelerator and Technology Commercialization— provides startups and small businesses with the tools to grow and thrive. For rural manufacturers looking to bring new products to market, the New Product Development Center steps in as a game changer.
When it comes to tackling society’s big challenges, OSU is all in. Its Tier 1 research initiatives, like the microbiome and opioid Initiatives, focus on solutions that make a real difference in health and wellness. Fire Service Training equips emergency responders with critical skills, while the Center for Local Government Technology offers tools and training to help communities run more efficiently.
And let’s not forget agriculture. The Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center drives food production innovation, while the Cooperative Extension Service reaches every county in the state, providing leadership and resource management that communities rely on.
Another area OSU is proud of is its work with tribal nations. The Center for Sovereign Nations partners with Oklahoma’s tribal communities to support student success and foster economic opportunities. High graduation rates, grant achievements and strong partnerships all highlight this center’s impact.
At the heart of these efforts is Innovation Park, where OSU and industry collide to create a launchpad for technology-based startups. Add to that The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts, which brings transformative arts experiences to the community, and you’ve got a university that’s not just thinking about economic impact — it’s living it.
Then there’s OSU Polytech, which is redefining workforce readiness. By aligning certification programs with high-demand fields like aerospace and advanced manufacturing, Polytech is preparing the next generation of skilled professionals to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
This designation as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University feels like validation. It’s a nod to the dedication of OSU students, faculty and partners who work tirelessly to make a difference. As Elizabeth Pollard, CEO of the Innovation Foundation, put it, “These achievements reflect the bold direction Oklahoma State is charting for the future. We’re committed to creating lasting impact through creativity and collaboration.”
Looking ahead, this isn’t the finish line for OSU — it’s a stepping stone. We’re doubling down on our efforts to drive innovation, foster partnerships and create meaningful opportunities for economic growth. The goal? To ensure that the positive change we’re driving extends far beyond our campus and across Oklahoma.
Innovation. Community. Progress. That’s the Cowboy way.
