APLU Honors Representative Alma Adams with Council on Governmental Affairs Congressional Achievement Award

The APLU Council on Governmental Affairs honored Representative Alma Adams (D-NC) with its Congressional Achievement Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to state universities and land-grant colleges and was presented at North Carolina A&T University, her alma mater and the institution that nominated her for the award. NC A&T and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill co-hosted the APLU Council on Governmental Affairs and Council on Research their joint summer meeting in late July.

Representative Adams is a longstanding and effective advocate on behalf of public universities and a tireless champion for HBCUs in particular, advancing policies that have had a positive impact on communities across the country. Representative Adams serves on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Education and Workforce. Representative Adams helped ensure passage of the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which permanently provides funding totaling $255 million a year for all Minority-Serving Institutions, including $85 million for HBCUs, which was signed into law in 2019.

Additionally, she has championed the bipartisan, bicameral IGNITE HBCU Excellence Act, the EDUCATORS for America Act to improve the teacher pipeline and graduate, as well as addressing the deferred maintenance backlog in agricultural research facilities at land-grant universities through the Research Facilities Act.
