Following a devastating tornado in Lubbock, Texas in May of 1970, Ted Fujita used debris analysis to develop the Fujita Tornado Scale. 30 years later, Texas Tech’s wind engineering program proposed improvements that led to the National Weather Service implementing the Enhanced Fujita Scale, program soon became the National Wind Institute.
