APLU Announces 2022 Malone International Leadership Award Recipient

Washington, DC – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today announced that Dr. James L. Moore III, Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at The Ohio State University, is the 2022 recipient of the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award. The Malone Award, a national honor sponsored by APLU and awarded annually, recognizes individuals who advance international education at public universities.

Dr. Moore led the development of a formal partnership between Ohio State’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of International Affairs in 2014 to increase participation in global education opportunities among students from underrepresented backgrounds. He also supported, developed, and/or led three major education abroad programs drawing participation of over 200 students affiliated with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in countries such as Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, and Morocco. Additionally, he has spearheaded efforts to foster campus-based internationalization, including a critical dialogue series convening students from underrepresented backgrounds and international students around issues of local and global importance.

Moore III’s important contributions to internationalization at Ohio State and across higher education,” said APLU President Peter McPherson. “Thanks to his work, many more students, including those who have long lacked access to global education opportunities, have been able to take advantage of critical learning opportunities.”

Over a three-year period to 2020, the number of Ohio State students from underrepresented backgrounds studying abroad increased from 24 percent to 31 percent. Nearly 800 students affiliated with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion have participated in education abroad programs over the past five years. University of Connecticut, Florida State University, and the University of West Georgia have drawn on the example of Ohio State’s diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused education abroad programming.

APLU’s Office of International, Community, & Economic Engagement leads the association’s diverse array of international initiatives. These initiatives help support campus internationalization, enhance and expand study abroad opportunities, strengthen engagement with the developing world, and support members’ efforts to engage with partners worldwide to address global challenges.

The Malone Award honors the legacy of the late Michael P. Malone, a champion of international education and one-time chair of the APLU Commission on International Education. Malone served as president of Montana State University from 1991 until his death in 1999.
