APLU Announces 2025 Malone International Leadership Award Recipient
Washington, DC – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today announced that Dr. Russell Ivy, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), is the winner of the 2025 Malone International Award. The Malone Award, a national honor sponsored by APLU and given annually, recognizes individuals who advance international education at public universities.
“Congratulations to Russell Ivy on winning the 2025 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award,” said APLU President Mark Becker. “As a champion of international engagement for more than 30 years, his work to advance global impact and international collaboration has enhanced FAU’s education, research, and community engagement mission and helped bolster critical international engagement in the higher education sector.”
In his current role as interim provost, Dr. Ivy oversees the Center for Global Engagement, which he founded nearly a decade ago. While serving as associate provost for academic programs, Dr. Ivy led the creation of a central hub to support the “Global Perspectives and Participation” platform of the university’s 2015-2025 strategic plan. He worked to centralize all academic international activities under this umbrella and align resources needed to help international students succeed.
As a result, there are more programs than ever to help international students at FAU achieve academic and career goals. International enrollment has grown to more than 2,000 students from more than 100 countries, who contribute to a vibrant multicultural community, giving all students exposure to a wide variety of perspectives, ideas, and traditions.
The result of Dr. Ivy’s efforts can also be seen beyond campus: Florida Atlantic’s international student enrollment has a $36.3 million economic impact in the state in 2022-23 and supported 323 jobs driving regional growth in major industries such as education, retail, transportation, and telecommunications.
APLU’s Office of International, Community, & Economic Engagement leads the association’s diverse array of international initiatives. These initiatives help support campus internationalization, enhance and expand study abroad opportunities, strengthen engagement with the developing world, and support members’ efforts to engage with partners worldwide to address global challenges.
The Malone Award honors the legacy of the late Michael P. Malone, a champion of international education and one-time chair of the APLU Commission on International Education. Malone served as president of Montana State University from 1991 to 1999.
