APLU Applauds Confirmation of Sethuraman Panchanathan as Director of the National Science Foundation

Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today released the following statement applauding the Senate confirmation of Sethuraman Panchanathan as Director of the National Science Foundation.

“We’re thrilled that Sethuraman Panchanathan has been confirmed as Director of the National Science Foundation. Dr. Panchanathan assumes the post at a critical time and we’re confident he’s more than up to the job of ensuring the United States remains the world’s leading center of scientific discovery and innovation.

“His experience as researcher, professor, and university administrator position him to excel in the new role. He also brings deep connections to the university community. Those of us in the public research university community have long admired his intellect, knowledge across disciplines, vision, and collaboration across universities, industry and government. His enthusiasm and excitement for science is infectious. As chair of APLU’s Council on Research for two years, Dr. Panchanathan led a national group of senior research officers from our nation’s top public research universities as they sought to collectively strengthen and improve their world-class, campus-based research on behalf of the American people.

“We thank the Senate for confirming his appointment and we look forward to collaborating with Dr. Panchanathan as he assumes leadership of NSF. We’re confident he will bring visionary leadership to the agency.”
