Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today released the following statement on the Research Investment to Spark the Economy (RISE) Act, which Senators Markey, Tillis, Gardner, and Peters introduced today. A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced companion legislation in the House last month.
“APLU thanks Senators Edward Markey (D-MA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Gary Peters (D-MI) for introducing the RISE Act. The pandemic has placed the U.S. scientific leadership in a precarious position. As public research universities raced to slow the spread of COVID-19, they were forced to halt or postpone other important research projects that in many cases had been years or decades in the making. This bill recognizes that without new investments, the reverberations of that shutdown will be felt for years to come. We thank this bipartisan group Senators for advancing a legislative solution that meets the scale of the challenge at a time of intense global competition.”
