APLU Statement on Department of Education’s Move to Reopen Borrower Defense to Repayment & Gainful Employment Regulations

Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to reopen the borrower defense to repayment and gainful employment regulations.

“Both the borrower defense to repayment and gainful employment rules contain critical, but imperfect consumer protections. Changes can be considered, but we should not go backward in protecting students from institutions with fraudulent practices and terrible outcomes. APLU looks forward to working with the Department of Education to ensure the interests of students and the integrity of the federal financial aid system are protected.”
