Alvaro J. Muñiz joined APLU in March 2022 and serves as Director in the Office for International, Community, and Economic Engagement. In this role, he oversees the Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities Designation (IEP) program within the Commission on Economic and Community Engagement (CECE).

Before joining APLU, Alvaro worked at George Mason University in the Office of the Provost, where he provided strategy and project management to numerous university-wide projects, including ADVANCE and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Tech Talent Investment Program. He also managed a $1M grant from the Strada Education Network to launch the ADVANCE Career Accelerator Toolkit, a first-of-its-kind web-based application designed to help prospective students select majors based on desired career outcomes.

Earlier in his career, Alvaro worked at Ashoka and supported numerous national and international social entrepreneurship projects. He also served as a Deputy Chief of Staff with the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners where he worked on technology ecosystem initiatives, policy research, and strategy. He is also a graduate of Leadership Miami’s 35th class.

Alvaro holds a JD from Saint Louis University School of Law, a BA in Political Science from Providence College, and a Sports Impact Leadership Certificate from Johns Hopkins University. Outside of work, he enjoys cheering for the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins, going to the movies, cooking, and painting. His life goal is to visit all the MLB ballparks (currently at 20) and Presidential Libraries and Museums (currently at 8). He is also fluent in Spanish.
