The Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award was established in 2000 to provide national recognition for a career of outstanding contributions to further international education at state and land-grant institutions. The Malone International Leadership Award honors those who further international education in public higher education and is dedicated to the memory of Michael P. Malone (1940-1999), who served as president of Montana State University from 1991 until his untimely death in 1999.
The award provides national recognition for faculty and staff non-practitioners who have made significant contributions to international education, either through innovative practices (Track I) or life-long impact (Track II). The award is presented at the Commission on International Initiatives Summer Meeting each summer.
The following criteria are central to the Malone International Leadership Award and will be considered in both tracks:
- Commitment to advancing global engagement opportunities to all members of the university community;
- Engagement with under-explored areas of study, inquiry, and/or with under-represented regions of the world;
- Impact and scope of the individual’s efforts on advancing global engagement.
- Individuals nominated must currently be employed at an APLU-member institution.
