The I-Corps™ is a National Science Foundation initiative to increase the economic impact of research it has funded by training researchers to become entrepreneurs. NSF offers select researchers the opportunity to participate in a special, accelerated version of Stanford University’s Lean Launch Pad course. This revolutionary course engages participants in moving products out of the lab and into the market by talking to potential customers, partners and competitors.

What the model represents is the complex and dynamic relationship between the entrepreneurial university, industry partners and government entities. The goal of this interconnected partnership is to create an innovation ecosystem that thrives on combining the knowledge creation capabilities, of the entrepreneurial University, with the needs of private and non-profit partners, along with the policies, investments and oversight of government to support the regional economic ecosystem.

The University works directly with many public institutions and community partners on economic development and workforce initiatives. State-based partners, such as the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Life Science Alley, the Minnesota High Tech Association and Greater MSP are part of the University’s broader innovation network that is helping to grow the economy, address workforce needs and advance new technologies in key industries, such as Minnesota’s world-class medical device cluster.

The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), part of the University of Minnesota’s Duluth campus, has a history of helping create resilient communities through applied research. The NRRI, which opened in 1985, studies the economic impact and sustainability of Minnesota’s minerals, forest products, peat, biomass, and water-related industries.

Although the Kauffman Foundation developed and promotes GEW, Penn State has taken the concept to a new level. Most of the global partners plan less than five events during GEW, which is held the third week in November. Penn State GEW2014 offered 78 events to over 5,000 people, more than any other U.S. partner. Runner-up, Startup Seattle, held 58 events, and the Washington (State) Department of Commerce developed 52 events.

The Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory’s mission is to bring the real-world into the classroom by providing senior undergraduate engineering students with practical, hands-on experience through industry-sponsored and client-based capstone design projects. The Learning Factory is both a state-of-the-art prototyping facility and a unique learning experience at Penn State.

The DifferenceMaker program contributes to UMass Lowell’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and supports growth of new businesses and industries by allowing students to apply their education through experiential learning. The DifferenceMaker program1 was launched in June 2012, under the auspices of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UMass Lowell. The goal of the program is to introduce students to creative problem-solving, innovation, and entrepreneurship, as well as accelerate purpose in their education, connect them to experienced alumni, and encourage an ethos of social responsibility.

Success Boston College Completion Initiative (SBI), which aims to double the college graduation rate of BPS graduates. As his first action as co-chair, Chancellor Motley recruited thirty-seven Massachusetts colleges and universities to join the unprecedented partnership with BPS, city government, local foundations, and nonprofits.

The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center ( ) leverages the engineering, business and clinical strengths of the University’s Lowell and Worcester campuses to support the development and launch of new medical device startup companies across Massachusetts. Since its founding in 2006, the startup companies M2D2 has worked with have raised over $44 million dollars in private investment funds, $7 million dollars in federal and state grant and loan guarantees, directly employ 61 people, and support the employment of another 200 people in the medical device supply chain.

UMass Lowell’s Service-Learning Integrated throughout the College of Engineering (SLICE)1 program integrates service-learning into the engineering curriculum so that every student is exposed to service-learning in every semester. Since 2004, SLICE has established sustainable partnerships with regional community organizations.
