In 2012, the Innovation Institute began to focus on a largely untapped source of talent at the University: student entrepreneurs. The Institute coordinated existing student-focused programs and allocated resources to increase capacity and fill gaps in programming. New positions were created, and four areas were targeted for investment: Education/Events, Competitions , Incubation/Acceleration , Entrepreneurial Living Learning Community.

Filling the demand for entrepreneurship education, skills, and networks is a challenge facing many regions, educational institutions, economic development agencies, and entrepreneurs. DC I-Corps,1 a National Science Foundation (NSF)—funded program, part of the Innovation Corps (I-Corps) initiative, offers unique ways to build a regional innovation ecosystem, transition technology out of the universities and federal labs, and provide mentoring services to entrepreneurs.

The first center to emerge from this collaboration is the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM).1 In 2013 this consortium moved into a 62,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the Rolls-Royce campus in Prince George County. The work done at CCAM, which to date includes 58 projects, is unique in that its members collaborate to produce new techniques and processes applied in aerospace, defense,
transportation, consumer electronics and other industries.2 Research and development risks and costs are shared by members and research results are shared, allowing members capitalize on developments that emerge from the research.

TORC was founded in 2005 and now employing about 35 people, with plans to add 8 employees this year in a new $2.5 million space located in a Blacksburg industrial park. TORC is also Involved in robotics research, including an intelligent ground vehicle competition that Tech won five years in a row, he spotted a disturbing trend. Bright and talented students would work with exceptional professors to develop groundbreaking innovations.

Of course the core mission of WSU is the education of its students, an education which begins in the traditional classroom, but goes far beyond. WSU’s location in the heart of Detroit provides many opportunities for students to apply classroom learning to real-life challenges. Street Medicine Detroit and the Program for Entrepreneurship and Business Law are two programs that underscore the difference Wayne State students are making in Detroit.

With the nation’s largest single-campus medical school, WSU provides world class education and training for health care professionals. About 30% of practicing physicians in Michigan and 43% of practicing physicians in the tri-county area of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb received all or part of their medical training at Wayne State. By working with partners like the Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System, Wayne State maximizes the impact of its research and care capabilities for a stronger, healthier Detroit.

create jobs. IURTC’s Board of Directors, chaired by President McRobbie, was reorganized to be comprised of prominent Indiana innovators, executives, and faculty leaders attuned to various aspects of the commercialization process.

In 2007, he launched Practice Management Externship programs to provide experiential learning to fourth-year veterinary medicine students—similar in concept to their fourth-year clinical rotations. Through the programs, students get an inside look at independent veterinary practices. Over a three-week period, groups of seven or eight vet students spend a few days in each of two private practices alongside the office staff, observing client visits and analyzing the workflow, service, and financial performance.

Through partnerships with more than a dozen school districts, IS3D has developed animation and games, applications, e-books and interactive case studies that help students develop and hone the problem-solving skills required for successful careers in STEM fields. Athens Academy science teacher Anna Scott helps one of her students navigate the IS3D software in class. IS3D’s latest patent-pending innovation provides teachers with an innovative assessment tool. the ability to assess how students are progressing through each of IS3D’s educational programs.

The Georgia Rural Medical Scholarship Program (GRSP) was established in 2010 to expose more Georgia medical students to rural health care. With the help of UGA’s Archway Partnership professional, Washington County established a partnership with Mercer University Medical School (about 60 miles away in Macon, Ga.) to offer rotations for students in the county’s private medical practices and at the Washington County Regional Medical Center (WCRMC).
