Through the programs, students get an inside look at independent veterinary practices. WSU has embraced its role as an anchor institution in Detroit in several ways. First, the University has invested in community redevelopment. Midtown Detroit currently has a 97% occupancy rate for rental housing. As a major land owner in Midtown, WSU looks for creative ways to increase available housing stock, not only for the campus community, but the broader community. In 2007, the University entered into its first ever partnership with a private developer to build Studio One Apartments, the first phase of its South University Village plan.

The University of Toledo’s College of Engineering instituted a mandatory cooperative education program in 1997. This program is one of only eight engineering schools in the entire nation to require a co-op experience as a condition of graduation. The UT mandatory co-op program requires all engineering undergraduates to complete a minimum of three semesters of work experience as part of their curriculum. The work experience must involve the students in engineering-related projects or programs and can be at industrial, government, or at the sites of other organizations (e.g., hospitals, educational institutions).

In partnership with the University at Albany, HocusLocus, LLC. developed a trans-RNA switching mechanism called structurally interacting RNA or “sxRNA” that uses unique microRNA expression profiles to express desired proteins in a cell specific manner. sxRNA technology enables targeted expression of any chosen protein in cells of specific tissues, disease states, and developmental stages by coupling post- transcriptional regulation processes with unique microRNA signatures.
